Reformer Pilates

This is reformer, but not as you know it. We work with movement and breath to facilitate a whole body and whole self experience that transforms how you live and feel in your body. The reformer is the dream machine of the pilates world, it guides you in flexibility and challenges you in strength. There is nothing else quite like it.

Level 1 – Suitable for total beginners so don’t be shy- learn the ropes literally!
Level 2 – It’s time to turn up the heat
Level 3 – You have hit the next level… Not for the faint hearted.

  • Most people are familiar with Pilates, it is a low-impact exercise routine that is popular for flattening and toning the midsection. It is usually performed on an exercise mat.

Reformer Pilates does not use a mat but a revolutionary machine known as a Reformer. We know that machine sounds scary but trust us it will be your new best friend! The Reformer machine was designed by Joseph Pilates, the inventor of Pilates.

The machine consists of a bed-like frame that is topped with a flat platform called a carriage. The carriage is mounted on wheels that allow it to roll back and forward. The Reformer machine uses springs that can be adjusted to offer different levels of assistance and resistance.

  • Yes, Reformer Pilates is an excellent all-round exercise that has many benefits. Reformer Pilates is hugely beneficial for overall physical fitness. It can improve core strength, leads to greater flexibility and balance, and it also improves posture.

Another benefit of Reformer Pilates is the fact it is a low-impact exercise routine, which places less stress on joints. This makes it a great exercise routine for those recovering from injury.

Finally, like all exercise routines, Reformer Pilates is also great for mental health. Physical activity releases endorphins which promote a positive outlook on life.

  • At Reformation we focus on so much more than weight loss. We are committed to each and every person leaving the studio feeling empowered and vibrant. Reformer Pilates can be excellent for toning and as part of an overall weight loss routine, but it does so much more than just that.

The muscle-toning nature of Reformer Pilates is fantastic. Muscles are metabolic machines and the reformer machine will help you discover and tone muscles you did not even know you had!

This challenging but mindful movement linked with breath will leave you feeling not only physically fantastic, but mentally alert, focused and empowered.

  • Reformer Pilates is designed as a muscle-toning and muscle-stretching exercise. The muscle-stretching part of Reformer Pilates is at the heart of how Reformer Pilates can change your body.

Regular Reformer Pilates will change your body by honing long, lean muscles that improve posture and have a huge impact on your overall body structure. Reformer Pilates is both a bodyweight and an actual weight training routine. This combination sculpts the body and builds a better muscle to fat ratio.

Overall, by stretching and strengthening muscles, Reformer Pilates can quickly achieve noticeable results quicker than any other form of pilates.

  • The first thing is not to feel intimidated, this is a common reaction when first seeing a reformer machine! But don’t worry, we’ve all been there, and with a little practice and some gentle guidance, you will soon feel like a “reformer master!”

Even if you’re used to “mat pilates”, then the movement and resistance of the Reformer machine may seem a little disorientating during the first class. But by the end of it, you will feel far more comfortable and ready to reap the benefits and joys of reformer pilates.

The important thing is to have fun, and soon the reformer machine will seem like an old friend.

Yoga

We distill ancient teachings into authentic  practices. Our classes open the doorway to wholehearted joyful living and inner awakening. All of our classes are permeated with intention and heart with connection at their centre and are interwoven with philosophy, Taoist and Tantric traditions that bring about energetic shifts and fresh perspectives.

Embody Yoga: At Reformation we Embody to Embolden. We elevate our teaching to inspire connection with our bodies, hearts and the earth around us. We feel deeply into our feminine wisdom, connecting with the art of kriyas, breathwork and meditation to drop down and tune in as we move our bodies to still our soul.

Empower Yoga: Challenging asana and creative sequences to challenge the body and mind. Think vigorous flows with more pace and tempo interspersed with balances, inversions as well as quiet moments and breathwork to balance the system and leave you feeling you can take on the world.

  • Yoga is a complete holistic system that works with the mind and body at the same time. The physical side of yoga is one that most people are familiar with – yoga poses (or asanas to give them their proper title) are combined with breathing exercises (pranayama) and meditation. Combined, these have great physical, mental and spiritual benefits.

Any exercise discipline is excellent for mental health, but what makes Yoga stand apart is that the physical asanas along with breathwork/pranayama and meditation are woven together so that each and every class looks after the full sphere of holistic health.

  • Yoga offers a whole host of health boosting benefits, in fact it could be described as an all-in-one discipline that improves overall well-being and health.

Physically, yoga asanas help to tone and strengthen muscles, overall fitness, and of course, improve flexibility. The latter is what springs to most people’s minds when they think of yoga, and this can put some people off if they consider themselves “not flexible enough.”

But nothing could be further from the truth. One of the huge benefits of yoga is that it is suitable for absolutely everyone. The mindful movement practised in yoga makes it perfect for all levels of fitness and flexibility.

Other physical benefits of yoga include improved cardiac and circulatory health, breathing improvements, better posture and even pain-relieving qualities.

But where it has the advantage over just about any other discipline is the spiritual and mental health benefits that yoga brings. Some of these are immediately apparent. The meditative and side of yoga releases pent up tensions and stresses, producing a “feel good” factor that instantly calms and destresses.

As your yoga journey progresses, yoga teaches you to be more aware of your inner self and your emotional needs. This improves confidence, focus, and mindfulness.

The great thing is that all these benefits are achievable quickly. Most people report improvements in health and well-being in just a few short weeks.

  • This is largely down to the individual. There are a percentage who practice 3 times a week to

people who practise daily; however even just practising once a week will make a difference to your health. Yoga is a therapeutic discipline that strengthens the body and destresses the mind. With this holistic approach yoga is not competitive and although challenging encourages mindful awareness of your body and your abilities.

  • While exercise is considered a purely physical workout that improves physical health, yoga goes much further than this.

Yoga can be thought of as an all-over workout that doesn’t just improve physical health (which it does!) but yoga also offers a space for self reflection, pausing and connection which are sorely lacking in our busy day to day lives. We work with our nervous system to create homeostasis and healing in the body along with hormone balancing rejuvenation and energy redistribution At the end of a yoga session, people are left feeling relaxed, destressed, energised, and ready to take on the world.

  • Yoga is fantastic and is renowned for its “calming” abilities. However, if you are preparing for your first yoga class, you are more likely to be feeling just a little nervous.

Beginners usually worry about whether they will be able to perform the poses or whether they will feel out of place amongst more experienced classmates. Well, don’t worry, although these are natural concerns, most people come away from their first yoga class feeling reassured regardless of how fit and flexible they are to begin with.

Our studio is warm and welcoming with people on hand to show you where to go, where to get a mat or just chat about our different offerings and teachers. Your teacher will offer modifications and guidance as needed and you can take things at your own pace. Our intention with Reformation is that every person that walks through our doors for class leaves feeling empowered, centred and energised.

  • Absolutely you can, there is no pre-requisite level of flexibility needed for yoga classes. In fact, less flexible people can often make the best yoga students.

Within a few classes, you will begin to notice your flexibility, strength, and agility improving. As your yoga journey progresses, you will also see great improvements in your overall well-being, ability to focus, confidence, and stress levels.

  • Yes, yoga is a discipline that is suitable for all levels of fitness. Indeed, for those looking to start a fitness journey, yoga is the perfect place to start. The more mindful pace of yoga, combined with its meditative side, can provide an effective way to improve your overall health, fitness, and well-being.

  • Be comfortable! Wear anything you fancy that allows you to move and stretch easily and will keep you cool, and you won’t go far wrong.

Some people prefer to keep it loose and baggy, others prefer leggings and tops, yoga pants are not obligatory! Comfort and mobility are the only recommendations.

For after the class, you may want to consider a sweater for when you begin to cool down, but apart from that, be comfortable and be yourself!

  • As with any form of exercise, it is not a good idea to sit down for a big meal just before class. Ideally, you should allow at least two hours between a sizable meal and your yoga class.

Hydration is always important, so drink some water before your class.

Workshops are the great way to go deeper into specialised movements and advance your skills. You get to learn and explore in an interactive environment that can take your practise on leaps and bounds.

We offer a wide range of workshops including muscle releasing myofascial release workshops, advanced asana workshops and specialised running workshops. See below for all upcoming events.

Yin

  • Yin Yoga is a form of yoga that uses long-held floor poses that work wonders on the deepest tissues of the body. Unlike traditional “yang” yoga, which targets muscles, the long-held poses of Yin Yoga target the joints, ligaments, bones and the body’s deep fascia networks.

It can be described as a “passive” form of yoga, with the floor exercises involving postures that can be held for as long as 5 minutes. These exercises mainly focus on the lower body, including the hips, pelvis, lower spine, and inner thighs.

As well as being a fantastic workout for the deeper tissues, Yin Yoga is also renowned for its stress and anxiety bursting effects and for increasing flexibility and circulation.

  • Yin Yoga is a fantastic way for beginners to discover the joys of yoga. Even those who have less flexible bodies will soon begin to adapt and appreciate the “passive” pace of a Yin Yoga session, which gives time to perfect and practice the poses required.

Compared to the more demanding forms of yoga where poses are held for far shorter periods, Yin Yoga gives students the time to appreciate and learn the necessary poses and work on the details like posture and alignment.

For those wanting to learn yoga, Yin Yoga provides a great stepping stone from which a student can branch out in many directions.

  • Yin Yoga poses, or asanas to give them their official name, are long-held poses that target the deeper structures within the body. This physically strengthens deep-lying tissues, ligaments and bones. It also boosts mental strength and fitness by improving the energy flow within a body.

The poses mainly, although not exclusively, focus on the lower part of the body, which is especially rich in connective tissues.

    Typical Yin Yoga poses include:

    Low lunge pose

    Broken wing pose

    Pigeon pose

    Supported fish pose

    Supported Savasana

With poses held for a few minutes or more, Yin Yoga is an excellent way for beginners to get into yoga.

  • Yin Yoga is an incredibly versatile form of yoga that has many benefits, both physical and mental.

Physically, Yin Yoga is a fantastic way of strengthening and toning deeper parts of the body, including ligaments & tendons, bones & joints, and the fascia network. (fascia is the biological material that binds the body together)

The flexibility of a body is also greatly improved through regular Yin Yoga sessions. The longer nature of the poses means that this allows beginners and less flexible people to work on improving their flexibility without stressing about quickly having to change their pose.

It also improves and frees up the energy flow, or chi, within us. This can have a beneficial impact on organ health.

Mentally, this same improvement in energy flow helps to fight stress, anxiety, and depression. Yin Yoga can bring an inner peace that restores mental balance.

  • If you are just starting out on your Yin Yoga journey, then the thought of that first-class journey might seem a little daunting. Don’t worry, this is quite normal, and by the end of the session, any doubts or misapprehensions will have vanished!

Yin Yoga is a passive form of yoga, with fewer poses that are held for longer times. This makes it a perfect form of yoga for beginners looking to reap the huge range of benefits that all forms of yoga bring.

One of the major doubts that people have is whether they are fit or flexible enough for yin yoga. The short answer is yes! Our classes cater for everyone, regardless of their level of fitness.

In fact, because poses are held for as long as five minutes, yin yoga is a perfect stepping stone for those looking to improve their overall health and well-being.
